Item Backwater Tourism in Assolna: Pathway to Sustainable Tourism Development(ASST. PROF. DR. SURABHI GORE, 2026) Backwater Tourism in Assolna: Pathway to Sustainable Tourism Development; DENISA LIA LUIS; DWAIN RESURRECTION RODRIGUES; FANISHKA ABENIE CLEMENTE; GRATEL LIVIA FERNANDESPurpose: The study was initiated to examine the potential for sustainable, community-based tourism in Assolna, a riverine village along the Sal River in Goa. The research aims to balance tourism development with environmental conservation and the socio-economic well-being of the local community. Methodology: A mixed-method approach was adopted, including field observations, surveys, interaction with residents, and analysis of existing tourism resources and environmental conditions. The study assessed natural attractions, traditional livelihoods, current infrastructure and stakeholder perceptions. Findings: The results indicate that Assolna possesses strong potential for eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and river-based activities. However, stakeholders are well aware of the negative impacts and do not want unsustainable tourism. The study concludes that a structured, community-driven tourism model focusing on environmental protection, local participation, and responsible planning is essential for long-term sustainability and inclusive development. Hence, an Assolna Sustainable Community River Tourism Plan (ASCRTP) is suggested. Implications: The research highlights the practical implications by providing a structured, sustainable tourism plan that local authorities and stakeholders can implement to create employment and support local livelihoods. The study also has important social implications, as it encourages active participation of local youth, fishermen, and women’s self-help groups, thereby promoting community empowerment, cultural preservation, and social development. Originality of the research: The research focuses on sustainable river tourism in Assolna and proposes a community-based tourism model that integrates environmental protection, responsible tourism practices, and long-term economic and social benefits.
