Evolution of Goa's Eco Tourism: Insights from Locals and Beneficiaries
(ASST. PROF. CEZEL FERNANDES, 2026) H MOHAMED IBRAHIM; JAYDEN JOEL TEREZA; MAHESH BAINAPALLI RAO; MOHAMMAD ANAS SHAIKH; ZIVA JOY PIMENTA
For many decades, Goa has been a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors. In recent years, eco-tourism has emerged as a rapidly growing segment of the tourism industry, focusing on the natural environment and offering a potential solution to the negative impacts of mass tourism. This study aims to analyse the development and functioning of eco-tourism in Goa by examining locals and beneficiaries’ experiences and perceptions. It also assesses the level of awareness among locals and evaluates their overall perception of eco-tourism and its growth in the region. A mixed-methodology approach was adopted to systematically interpret both qualitative and quantitative data. The research is based on both primary and secondary data sources. The findings indicate that understanding the difference between eco-tourism and mass tourism, receiving information about eco-tourism, and believing that it helps preserve culture significantly increase locals’ awareness of eco-tourism activities in Goa. However, knowledge of environmental principles alone does not significantly improve awareness. Factor analysis identifies three key dimensions: Economic Outcome, Negative Externalities, and Community Support. Eco-tourism contributes to job creation, community development, and improved quality of life, although income benefits vary and the cost of living has increased. At the same time, pollution, crowding, and disturbances influence negative perceptions and may reduce support for eco-tourism. While economic benefits and community participation foster positive attitudes toward eco-tourism, effective management of environmental impacts is essential to ensure its long-term sustainability and acceptance.
