The Stylistics of Insta-Narratives: Decoding Instagram’s Visual Language and Slang

In this project, we explore the topic, “The Stylistics of Insta Narratives: Decoding Instagram’s Visual Language and Slang.” Our focus is on the specific style in which visual stories are narrated on Instagram, alongside the visual elements and language used within the platform. These elements have a profound influence on people worldwide, affecting not only their cultures, beliefs, and knowledge but also their language and everyday ways of speaking. To conduct this research, we selected thirty diverse Instagram accounts to study the stylistics of digital narratives and visual elements. Our analysis covers Instagram’s history, features, and stylistic aspects - including its Reels, and Story Highlights. Furthermore, we examine the evolution of the English language from Old English to modern digital communication. This includes a deep dive into non-verbal language, graphology, hashtags, filters, slang, emojis, and memes. We also analyse the use of colour, influencer marketing terms, the pragmatic functions of slang, syntax and grammar. Our primary aim was to study how visual storytelling and the specific style of Instagram narratives work together to express ideas, messages, opinions, and emotions. Rather than relying on long sentences or dense paragraphs, these expressions are achieved through the strategic use of digital features and visual content. As there are still many users who may not fully understand the meanings of Instagram’s narrative terms, elements, or features, this project serves as a useful guide for anyone looking to navigate and understand this modern digital landscape.
