Item A study of service quality in Indian public sector banks using modified SERVQUAL model(2022-12) Vaz, SoniaAssessment of service quality has been widely utilized in the service sector, especially in the banking industry. The present study aims to understand the influence of service quality on customer loyalty in Indian public sector banks. The service quality is quantified with the help of a modified SERVQUAL model using dimensions Reliability, Assurance, Tangibles, Empathy, Responsiveness, Charges, and Convenience. Structural equation modelling (SEM) indicated that among all the dimensions, Assurance, Empathy, Responsiveness, and Tangible were found to have a significant relationship with service quality. The banks must focus on bringing in innovation in these parameters to maintain a high quality of service and achieve higher satisfaction, which subsequently develops customer trust towards the company. By bringing innovative changes to improve the service quality, the banks can also increase their competitive advantage and customer retention as service quality has a significant relationship with customer loyalty.Item ANALYSIS OF UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG MOTHERS IN GOA(2023) Almeida, MauriceIn a majority of the households in Goa, it is observed that the husband is the lone earning member of the house. The wife is the one who remains in the house taking care of the children and family proceedings. This paper tries to find out the various factors which force Goan mothers not to take up a job. A sample of 160 mothers was chosen using simple random sampling technique. Various personal details about them were recorded. Those unemployed were further asked to rate nine possible reasons for their unemployment on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 indicating that it’s a weak reason and 5 indicating that it’s a strong reason. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the nine variables into fewer components. The chi-square test of independence at 0.05 level of significance was used to test the association of unemployment of mothers with their place of living, religious identity, and the number of children they have. SPSS software was used to perform all the analyses. The results of EFA revealed that the nine variables were reduced into three components which were later named social restrictions, lack of resources, and selfsatisfaction. The chi-square test revealed that the pairs of variables employment status and place of living, along with employment status and religious affiliation are not associated at 0.05 level of significance, whereas it led to the conclusion that mothers having more than two children usually don’t take up a job.Item BULK DEALS, ABNORMAL RETURNS AND FRONT- RUNNING: EVIDENCE FROM INDIAN MARKETS(2023) Rabada, Jitendra; Barretto, HelicItem High-Utility Itemset Mining using Fuzzy Sets(2022) Khan, Salman; Almeida, TracyItem IFRS Convergence and Value Relevance of Indian Accounting Information: The Earnings-Returns Association Analysis(2022) Gomes, Lorraine; Costa, JuaoResearch aims: India has recently joined the accounting revolution by implementing the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) through the convergence mode. This paper aims to examine the value relevance of Indian accounting information by finding an association between stock returns and the levels of earnings and changes in earnings. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study follows both relative and incremental association approaches to investigate changes in the value relevance of accounting information prepared using the IFRS converged Indian Accounting Standards (Ind-AS), while also examining the impact of their voluntary use. The study employs the Easton and Harris (1991) model on accounting data collected from 2012-13 to 2019-20. The panel data of 7,064 firm-year observations covers 883 firms listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and uses relevant econometric tests and multivariate panel regressions to test the hypotheses. Research findings: The findings reveal a decline in the returns value relevance following both mandatory and voluntary IFRS convergence. Theoretical contribution/Originality: The study is the first to document the changes in value relevance based on stock returns since the IFRS convergence process began in India. Practitioner/Policy implication: This line of research is significant in Indian capital markets to unravel the effects of the new standards on accounting as well as stock market variables. It has managerial implications for firm and standard-setters.Item Impact analysis of e-learning on students of higher education institutions during COVID-19: A structural equation modelling approach(2022-10) Vaz, SoniaStaff members use tried-and-true procedures when completing workplace visits, delivering services, and completing client tasks. However, the COVID-19 pandemic compelled employers to change the work styles of individual employees to ensure good communication, work-life balance, and flexibility for employees while maintaining optimal work productivity levels. In addition, the World Health Organization established social separation guidelines to combat COVID-19. Thus, the pandemic challenged the work culture and resulted in employees being quarantined in their homes. As a result of this transformation, employees were encouraged to use digital tools to facilitate work-from-home opportunities. The current study analyzes employees' psychological and productive effects of work-fromhome culture. It also looks for coworker bonding threatened by this transformation and suggests a way to keep it intact. Through a thorough literature review, the authors developed a comprehensive model to assess the pandemic's impact on employees' lifestyles. The conceptual model was empirically tested by applying the model to data collected from 233 employees from various backgrounds. The model result was validated using Partial Least Squares Methods-Structural Equation Modeling. The inferences highlight the factors influencing employee morale and work culture and the parameters closely related to employee functioning in the organization that should not be affected.Item Impact of Police Work on Police Officers’ Spouses: a Study of Marital Quality and Quality of Life(2023) D’Silva, JeronimoDespite reports documenting adverse effects of stress due to work on police officers’ marriages, few empirical studies focus on the effect of police work on female spouses of police officers. Working as a police officer can pose numerous marital difficulties, several factors add to the marital difficulties of police officers’ marriages; these include their work shift, extended hours of work, shared commitment between work and family responsibilities, and cancelled leave. Often police officers bring their work-related tension and behaviours home with them; due to these, their family relationships suffer. In this study, we explored the nature of the relationship between marital quality and quality of life in female spouses of police officers and also examined differences in marital quality and quality of life with regard to career status and years of work. Non-police female spouses of police officers (N = 207) were surveyed from different parts of Goa, the Republic of India. The participants’ responses were gathered using questionnaires that assessed demographics, marital quality, and quality of life. Correlation analysis of the data revealed that marital quality and quality of life of the spouses of police officers were highly significantly and negatively correlated (r = − 0.628, p < 0.01). Results of one-way analysis of variance on marital quality indicated significant differences with regard to years of marriage. Results of the t-test indicated significant differences in quality of life with regard to years of marriage and career status.Item Mapping tourism strategy patterns on tourism area life cycle(2023) Gore, SurabhiPurpose Tourist destinations are constantly changing products, evolving as per the controls exerted by the stakeholders. The study aims to map the pattern of tourism development and identify the strategies formed at the destination over a seven-decade period for a state as a unit of analysis. Design/methodology/approach The paper evaluates tourism development through the tourism area life cycle (TALC) model and uses Mintzberg's strategy analysis process to identify strategies. The study involves time series analysis, pattern matching and explanation-building techniques. The TALC is plotted for the number of tourist arrivals from 1947 to 2019, and strategies are mapped for each stage. Findings The TALC shows a cycle-recycle pattern of tourism development. The research revealed several strategies at different stages. Both the central and state governments and entrepreneurs, distinctively and in conjunction, have formed strategies. The pattern shows the period of piecemeal and global strategic changes contributing to tourism development. Research limitations/implications The research unearths the strategies that drive the development curves of TALC, emphasising the integration of TALC with other theories. The research also assesses the strategy formed in the pre-tourism stage. Practical implications The research brings to light the use of TALC as a strategic road-mapping tool. In addition, the study emphasises the significance of global and piecemeal strategic periods and stakeholder's regulatory and operational roles. Originality/value The research uses a unique methodology that maps the strategies, periods of strategic changes and incremental strategies for each stage of TALC, along with identifying the stakeholders.Item Policy styles and India’s national action plan on climate change (NAPCC)(2022) Deshpande, TanviThis article assesses India’s policy style, with respect to climate change particularly the launch of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). The NAPCC was India’s first significant climate policy document that demonstrates a paradigm shift from the “structural conflict” policy paradigm towards “embedded liberalism”. Policy ideas favouring “embedded liberalism” emerged from the Indian state were significant for the formulation of the NAPCC. The NAPCC was formulated due to a proactive and partially consensual policy style. The policymaking processes of “learning & puzzling” regarding a domestic climate policy involved relevant state and non-state actors and the policy idea was “powered” by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). This article explores interactions between state and non-state actors to find that the Indian government, in the context of the global aspirations of an emerging power faciliated and led the formulation of the NAPCC under an embedded liberal climate policy paradigm.Item Self-esteem and suicide among college students(2023) D’Silva, JeronimoItem SMARTPHONE ADDICTION AND STUDY HABITS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS(2023) Pacheco, Brian; Marchon, TanyaThe present study assessed thelink between smartphone addiction and study habits of undergraduate students. The relationships of smartphone addiction to specific dimensions of study habits, namely, budgeting time, memory, taking examination, health were also investigated. In addition, the study sought to evaluate gender differences on the said variables. The sample for the study comprised of 200 undergraduate students from Goa between the ages of 17 - 21 (males = 100 and females = 100). The participants were selected by convenient sampling. Two psychological instruments — Mobile Phone Addiction Scale by Velayudhan and Srividya (2012), and Palsane and Sharma Study Habit Inventory by Palsane and Sharma (1989) were administered to participants. The results of the study indicated a small negative correlation between smartphone addiction and study habits. Smartphone addiction was negatively related to the budgeting time, memory, and taking examination dimensions of study habits. Significant gender differences in smartphone addiction and study habits were established.Item Vulnerability of Mangroves to Changing Coastal Regulation Zone: A Case Study of Mandovi and Zuari Rivers of Go(2022) Deshpande, TanviGoa is a coastal State located on the west coast of India, known for its pristine sandy beaches and environment. Ministry of Environment and Forest implemented Coastal Regulation Zone Notification in 1991 for monitoring the coastal zones for unplanned developmental activities but has been just for name-sake purposes (Mascarenhas 1999, Agarwal 2019). The regulation has been changed in recent years thereby making the coastal and the riverine ecosystem more vulnerable to human interference. In the name of development, various hap-hazardous, unplanned activities have taken place which is degrading the coastal and riverine environment, especially mangroves. This paper studies the vulnerability of mangroves to the changing regulations with respect to 1991 and the 2018 CRZ notifications considering the land use land cover changes in the regulated zones of Mandovi and Zuari rivers. Spatial analysis techniques and software such as Arc GIS 10.3, and ERDAS IMAGINE 2014 have been used for analysis and results. The findings from the study can be effectively implemented in monitoring the regulated zones and protecting mangroves efficiently.Item WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH GOVERNMENT FINANCIAL SCHEMES WITH REFERENCE TO SWARNAJAYANTI GRAM SWAROJGAR YOJANA SCHEME IN GOA(2022) DHUMATKAR, DEEPA V.Women play an important role in the overall growth of human resources. They can be the part of economic activity and profession, while being the caregivers and mothers of their families and children. Women in India face a lot of social hurdles however, despite all this, women have become successful entrepreneurs. There are several awareness programs conducted in order to encourage women to play a vital role in the development of the country. A lot of attention has been given to the value of women in various development plans across the world. Consequently, in the recent years there has been an increased focus on women empowerment and entrepreneurship. There have been several studies and research done on the dynamics and mobilization of women empowerment. The government has implemented various anti-poverty programs too that failed for proper mobilization by women. However, the development agencies have praised some micro-credit initiatives as an ideal intervention that will lead to a positive impact on economic development and a potential to improve the social status of women. Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY) Scheme is one of the anti-poverty programs launched by the government in order to boost women entrepreneurship. The SGSY Scheme is aimed to take Below Poverty Line families to Above Poverty Line by focusing on group initiatives to organize rural poor in Self Help Groups (SHGs) with training, social mobilization, marketing, and capacity building, apart from the income-generating assets provision with government subsidy and bank credit. The paper focusses on the concept of women entrepreneurship their empowerment through financial schemes launched by the government with reference to Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY) Scheme. This study also concludes that there is a need to empower lower middle-class and rural women also for the overall growth of the State and the Country.
