A STUDY ON THE SOCIO – ECONOMIC IMPACT OF RIVER SAL ON LOCAL COMMUNITIES
(ASST. PROF. RAISA CARDOZO, 2026) ALISHA .F. FERNANDES; MANASI S CHARI; SAJAL L SALGAOKAR; VELANCIA CRASTO; SIMRAN L FERNANDES
This study examines the socio-economic impact of River Sal on local communities in South Goa. Historically regarded as a lifeline of the Salcete region, River Sal has supported fishing, agriculture, trade, and cultural practices. However, rapid urbanisation, sewage discharge, industrial effluents, and solid waste dumping have contributed to significant environmental degradation, affecting both biodiversity and human livelihoods. The research adopts a descriptive and exploratory design using a mixed-method approach. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with approximately 30 respondents residing in villages along River Sal. Secondary data were obtained from academic literature, government reports, and newspaper sources. The study applies sociological perspectives such as Environmental Sociology, Risk Society Theory, Political Ecology, and Common Pool Resource Theory to analyse the interconnected relationship between environment and society. Findings reveal that a majority of respondents perceive a decline in water quality and fish availability. Garbage dumping and sewage discharge are identified as major causes of pollution. While many respondents depend directly or indirectly on the river for livelihood, most believe that government interventions are insufficient. At the same time, strong community awareness and willingness to participate in conservation efforts were observed. The study concludes that River Sal functions as a socio-ecological indicator reflecting governance gaps, environmental risk, and livelihood vulnerability. Sustainable river management requires integrated policy implementation, stronger enforcement mechanisms, and active community participation to ensure protection for future generations.

(ASSOC. PROF. DR. RITA BRAGANZA, 2026) KHUSHI ARJUN KERKAR; SWIZEL FERNANDES; ASHON JORDY MASCARENHAS; ASIYAMATH SUNAINA M.A; CLERISA SIMOES
This study attempts to research on the Evolution of Goan Cultural Legacy from Tradition to Modernity. Goa has a glorious past, deeply rooted in village traditions, ritual practices and oral legends. The Goan Identity has evolved due to the impact of the rule of various dynasties such as the Kadambas, the Vijayanagara rulers and the Adil Shahis, who left their cultural imprints on the Goan society, and the emergence of the Portuguese in Goa. It is a blend of Orient and Occident, where local traditions coexist with Western influences. The ‘Golden Goa’ image has evolved due to its long-chequered history. This project delves into the various facets of Goan socio-cultural legacy, with special reference to specific festivals and community practices in order to understand the transition of Goan culture from tradition to modernity

Villains or Not? Examining Anti-Hero Characters in Select Films
(ASST. PROF. VALERIE J. AFONSO, 2026) ELVIA PERPETUAL BARBOSA; RENOSHKA KENOSIS FERNANDES; STACY VALANKA CORREIA; TANISHA MAHESH NAIK; VELERIE FURTADO
The purpose of this project is to analyze the concept of ‘anti-hero’ beyond that of the traditional villain through the selected films. In classical literature and cinema, the traditional villain was portrayed as purely evil and selfish, and the only purpose was to oppose the hero. Earlier literature and cinema were based on the absolute good versus evil, whereas modern literature and cinema are beginning to explore the complexities involved in human morality and develop three-dimensional characters that are better representations of real-life people. The research project will explore how anti-heroes are developed through personal tragedy, social injustice, corruption, mental illness, and emotional pain. This research project will examine five films in detail – Gabbar Is Back, V For Vendetta, Joker, Promising Young Woman and Birds of Prey – to show how anti-heroes commit illegal or violent acts to achieve their goals while still being motivated by a desire for justice, revenge or positive change. An examination of the themes of sacrifice, rebellion, morality, corruption, trauma, and resistance will be conducted using key scenes and dialogue from the films. The study investigates how anti-heroes and villains have changed from past literature and films up until now, as well as how people’s perceptions have changed over time. A survey was conducted on today’s young adult population regarding their views on anti-heroes and why they tend to prefer characters who are imperfect/realistic over those who are perfect/idealistic. Results indicate that modern anti-heroes reflect the real-life difficulties of being human and the complexities of society today. Ultimately, it was concluded in this research project that moral “good” and moral “evil” no longer define how we see ourselves and the world through film; therefore, many see anti- heroes as relatable.

The Stylistics of Insta-Narratives: Decoding Instagram’s Visual Language and Slang
(ASST.PROF.SASHA S. PEREIRA, 2026) REZIMA NIVLOTA SOARES; SABIYA K; HEENA KAUSAR HALGI; PRACHI PRASHANT RAUT; SANJANA RAVI KITURKAR
In this project, we explore the topic, “The Stylistics of Insta Narratives: Decoding Instagram’s Visual Language and Slang.” Our focus is on the specific style in which visual stories are narrated on Instagram, alongside the visual elements and language used within the platform. These elements have a profound influence on people worldwide, affecting not only their cultures, beliefs, and knowledge but also their language and everyday ways of speaking. To conduct this research, we selected thirty diverse Instagram accounts to study the stylistics of digital narratives and visual elements. Our analysis covers Instagram’s history, features, and stylistic aspects - including its Reels, and Story Highlights. Furthermore, we examine the evolution of the English language from Old English to modern digital communication. This includes a deep dive into non-verbal language, graphology, hashtags, filters, slang, emojis, and memes. We also analyse the use of colour, influencer marketing terms, the pragmatic functions of slang, syntax and grammar. Our primary aim was to study how visual storytelling and the specific style of Instagram narratives work together to express ideas, messages, opinions, and emotions. Rather than relying on long sentences or dense paragraphs, these expressions are achieved through the strategic use of digital features and visual content. As there are still many users who may not fully understand the meanings of Instagram’s narrative terms, elements, or features, this project serves as a useful guide for anyone looking to navigate and understand this modern digital landscape.

Escaping Reality, Discovering the Self: A Study of Fantasy Worlds in Select Works of Literature and Animation
(ASSISTANT PROF. MS. SAMILLA MAYURA VAZ, 2026) ANTHEA PRICHELLE COSTA; BLESSICA FERNANDES; DRAGILA PEPETUAL COSTA; SILVIYA TRAVASSO; EDWIN KALSOLKAR
Fantasy literature and animation provide imaginative spaces where individuals explore identity, emotions, and personal growth beyond the limits of everyday reality. This study examines Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Little Prince, Coraline, and Coco to understand how fantasy functions as a medium of escapism and self-discovery. The protagonists in these works enter fantastical worlds during moments of emotional conflict or alienation, using imagination to confront fears, question norms, and rediscover meaning. Through a comparative and thematic approach, supported by psychoanalytic and literary theories, the study highlights how literature and animation differently present inner journeys. While their forms vary, selected texts and films reveal that fantasy is not an escape from reality but a transformative space that enables self-awareness, healing, and renewed engagement with life.

Goa’s Forgotten Children: A Study of the Marginal Voices in Poskem by Wendell Rodricks
(ASSOC. PROF. MS. PRIYA CARVALHO E VIEGAS, 2026) CHRYSTAL ANNA FRENANDES; MISBAH BI SHAIKH; PRACHI PRADEEP TORASKAR; SUPRIYA YALLAPPA SHINDE; VELISCA CAFRITA D’SILVA
This project examines the often neglected and silenced tradition of the poskem system in Wendell Rodricks' novella, Poskem: Goans in the Shadows. Although Goa is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and Portuguese cultural heritage, the novella reveals a hidden social practice where children from disadvantaged backgrounds were taken in by affluent families, frequently under the pretence of charity, yet often facing emotional neglect and domestic servitude. The study delves into the historical roots of the poskem tradition, tracing its origins back to colonial Goa and exploring its ties to caste systems, social stigma, and power disparities. Through meticulous textual analysis, the study examines the experiences of five pivotal characters such as Alda, Liana, Nascimento, Sita, and Shanta, emphasizing themes of marginalization, identity, resilience, trauma, and belonging. Each narrative showcases diverse experiences—from exploitation and abandonment to acceptance and empowerment—thus offering a complex representation of the poskem practice in Goan society. This research highlights the marginalized voices and contests the romanticized portrayals of Goan society.

(ASST. PROF. JOHN XAVIER D’SOUZA, 2026) ALFIYA JAMADAR; ASHWINI SHETTY; SANIA BAGAWAN; SWIZEL REBELLO; SUNIL VALMIKI
This project studies people who depend on self-employment for their livelihood in Chinchinim village of Salcete Taluka, Goa. Due to the shortage of regular salaried employment in the village, many residents have chosen self-employment as their main source of income. The purpose of this study is to examine the types of self- employment activities undertaken, the way income is earned and managed, and the challenges faced while carrying out these activities. The research is descriptive in nature. Primary data were collected from 63 self- employed individuals through a questionnaire. Secondary information was gathered from books, reports, journals, and reliable online sources to support the study. The collected data were analyzed using simple percentage techniques and presented in the form of tables and charts to make the findings easy to understand. The results of the study indicate that a large number of respondents are involved in small business and service-based activities. Their earnings are irregular and change from time to time, which makes saving money difficult. The main issues faced by self-employed people include intense competition, limited access to finance, long working hours, and lack of awareness about government schemes. The study concludes that while Self-employment offers independence and flexibility, it requires better institutional support, financial assistance, and awareness to ensure long-term stability and sustainability.
